To suspend short term parking charges for
shoppers in designated Council off street car parks for one (1)
hour from 1 April 2021 to 30 April 2021 inclusive.
Lost income resulting from this decision will be a net budget pressure and reported accordingly through the Council’s performance and income monitoring processes.
Based on a 50% increase in the number of ‘free’ tickets issued in April (in light of lockdown relaxations), the income foregone based on existing data could be as much as c. £33,000. If 100% more ‘free’ tickets were issued, the income foregone could be as much as £44,000.
Suspending short term parking charges in relation to this decision means providing ONE (1) hour ‘free’ parking for shoppers in designated Council off street car parks. Such ‘free’ period being strictly subject to the display of a relevant parking ticket and compliance with all other notified parking requirements.
This decision to suspend short term parking
charges for shoppers was instructed by Cabinet Members in response
to the significant and ongoing impacts of the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic. The one hour free parking initiative is an
incentive to encourage people to come to Boston to shop, eat out
and spend locally in order to provide a much needed support to the
economy and to help and support local businesses during these
The decision follows the Delegated Decision dated 26 June 2020 to provide 2.5 hours free shopper parking. The suspension of short term parking charges for shoppers has and will remain subject to a monthly review.
This decision has been made following instruction from the Portfolio Holder and Leader of the Council.
